Steven Holl designed Simmons Hall, this MIT dormitory. |
Holl reports the plan was motivated at least in part by a natural sponge,
a shape having a "fractal distribution" of holes. |
What is a fractal distribution of holes? The shape on the right is constructed in
a fashion similar to the gasket: cut out one red square, three green squares, nine dark blue
squares, 27 light blue squares, 81 pink squares, and so on. |

The sponge and Simmon Hall have similar distributions of holes: a few large,
more middle-size, still more small, and so on. |
