Simmons Hall

Steven Holl designed Simmons Hall, this MIT dormitory.
Holl reports the plan was motivated at least in part by a natural sponge, a shape having a "fractal distribution" of holes.
What is a fractal distribution of holes? The shape on the right is constructed in a fashion similar to the gasket: cut out one red square, three green squares, nine dark blue squares, 27 light blue squares, 81 pink squares, and so on.

The sponge and Simmon Hall have similar distributions of holes: a few large, more middle-size, still more small, and so on.
