One of the most natural types of one-dimensional signals that can be fed into Xwpl is sound files. Unfortunately, Xwpl has very primitive sound support at this moment (reflecting the primitive nature of audio devices on most engineering workstations as compared to SGI and NeXT machines).
The only type of sound it can handle is 12 bit data coded in 8 bits with
-law compression, at a sample rate of 8 kHz (the U.S. digital telephony
standard).
For the moment, sound is supported only on computers having a /dev/audio type interface (such as Sun workstations and Linux systems with a sound card), and on the DEC 3000 AXP series with built-in baseboard audio.
