Math 340L (Matrices and Matrix Calculations), Fall 2010, exam info

A 1-page (standard letter size, 2-sided) handwritten crib sheet is allowed for each exam. Calculators may not be used on any exam.

First midterm Thu Sep 30.
- Practice problems (slightly more than one exam's worth), with answers.
- An old exam from Lorenzo Sadun's Spring 2010 section of this class, and a version of the same exam with solutions. This exam contains a few terms we haven't used (yet) in class: a transformation which maps into R^m is called "onto" if and only if its image is the whole R^m, and the "rank" of a matrix is the number of pivots in any row echelon form of that matrix. The old exam also emphasizes left and right inverses more than we did in class.

Second midterm Thu Nov 4.

- An old exam from Lorenzo Sadun's Spring 2010 section of this class, and a version of the same exam with solutions. This exam contains a few terms we haven't used in class: the "algebraic multiplicity" of an eigenvalue is its multiplicity as a root of the characteristic equation, while the "geometric multiplicity" is the dimension of the corresponding eigenspace.

Final exam Tue Dec 14. The exam is in FAC 21, scheduled from 2pm-5pm.

- An old exam from Lorenzo Sadun's Spring 2010 section of this class, and a version of the same exam with solutions. This exam contains a few things we didn't cover in class: skip 2d and 5c. It also uses one word we didn't use: "dominant" means the eigenvalue with the largest absolute value. Finally, it uses the notation "E_3" to mean an eigenspace corresponding to eigenvalue 3.
